GS-04: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-03 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial volunteer, governmental fire department brigade; 2) Performing rescue operations; 3) Operating fire communications equipment.
GS-03: Your resume must demonstrate at least six months of general experience. General experience must demonstrate the following: 1) ability to follow directions 2:) To read, understand, and retain instructions, regulations, and procedures. 3) Ability to perform the duties of the position.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS GS-04/ GS-03: The position requires the incumbent to be able to obtain the Firefighter I and Firefighter II certification within 12 months of employment. Additional qualification information can be found from the following Office of Personnel Management website: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

In lieu of specialized experience you may qualify at the GS-04 level with the following education substitute Successful completion of a 2-year course of study in an accredited college or university in Fire Training, Fire Science, or another related course work. OR Have a combination of experience and education that equates to one year of experience. The percentage of the required education plus the percentage of the required experience equal one hundred percent.
In lieu of specialized experience you may qualify at the GS-03 level with the following education substitute Successful completion of a 1-year related education or training. OR Have a combination of experience and education that equates to one year of experience. This is a PRIMARY/RIGOROUS position for SPECIAL RETIREMENT COVERAGE purposes. Position requires the ability to discern colors, contrast, and depth. The employee is required to report for duty during natural disasters and other emergency situations as directed by the Fire Chief. The employee is required to work a 72 hrs weekly, 144 hrs biweekly work schedule. May be required to participate on Hazardous Materials Teams (HAZMAT). May be subject to recall. Employee is required to use all safety equipment and clothing provided by management. If selected below the full performance level, you may be noncompetitively promoted to the next higher grade level after meeting all regulatory requirements, and upon the recommendation of management. Promotion is neither implied nor guaranteed.
