Job Description

Firefighter Position

Today, we are announcing a secret, unspecified position in Kingsville, TX (On-Site/Office).

Duties:

  • Performing structural firefighting duties for a variety of facilities.
  • Directing and deploying firefighting operational processes, equipment, and duties during emergency and non-emergency situations.
  • Performing wildland firefighting by suppressing wildfires using heavy-duty vehicles/equipment, and/or constructing fire lines in hazardous conditions.
  • Performing the following technical rescue functions: rope, vehicle and machinery, confined space, structural collapse, and wilderness.
  • Performing hazard and risk assessment techniques in completing initial incident analysis.
  • Selecting and applying the proper techniques or procedures for fire suppression and emergency situations.

Requirements:

  • Must be a US Citizen.
  • Must be determined suitable for federal employment.

  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • Applicants must meet the Department of Defense (DoD) certification requirements:
  • You will be required to work a rotating work schedule which includes nights, weekends, holidays, and is subject to mandatory overtime and recall.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • This is a Mission Essential position. You will be required to ensure organization or facility continuity of operations and/or completion of tasks that are considered essential to the mission designated by a local or command decision.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and use all safety apparel in accordance with established policies and procedures. You will be required to wear personal protective equipment and personal fire protection equipment during your work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position requires the employee to work under adverse environmental conditions and will fall under the respiratory protection program and hearing conservation program.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current CPR and First Aid certification.

Qualifications:

GS-04: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-03 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial volunteer, governmental fire department brigade; 2) Performing rescue operations; 3) Operating fire communications equipment.

GS-03: Your resume must demonstrate at least six months of general experience. General experience must demonstrate the following: 1) ability to follow directions 2:) To read, understand, and retain instructions, regulations, and procedures. 3) Ability to perform the duties of the position.

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS GS-04/ GS-03: The position requires the incumbent to be able to obtain the Firefighter I and Firefighter II certification within 12 months of employment. Additional qualification information can be found from the following Office of Personnel Management website: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

Education:

In lieu of specialized experience you may qualify at the GS-04 level with the following education substitute Successful completion of a 2-year course of study in an accredited college or university in Fire Training, Fire Science, or another related course work. OR Have a combination of experience and education that equates to one year of experience. The percentage of the required education plus the percentage of the required experience equal one hundred percent.

In lieu of specialized experience you may qualify at the GS-03 level with the following education substitute Successful completion of a 1-year related education or training. OR Have a combination of experience and education that equates to one year of experience. This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program. Several vacancies may be filled. This announcement uses the Defense Industrial Base, Major Range and Test Facilities direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service.

This is a PRIMARY/RIGOROUS position for SPECIAL RETIREMENT COVERAGE purposes. Position requires the ability to discern colors, contrast, and depth. The employee is required to report for duty during natural disasters and other emergency situations as directed by the Fire Chief. The employee is required to work a 72 hrs weekly, 144 hrs biweekly work schedule. May be required to participate on Hazardous Materials Teams (HAZMAT). May be subject to recall. Employee is required to use all safety equipment and clothing provided by management. If selected below the full performance level, you may be noncompetitively promoted to the next higher grade level after meeting all regulatory requirements, and upon the recommendation of management.
